Be An Arrogant Traveler

One of the things misunderstood by most people is the value of “learning other cultures”. They’d say that it is cool to “learn different cultures” by adapting to the local culture and respecting local people. So-called “humble travellers” would go on further that you need to be humble enough to accept, adapt, respect to the local culture. There are lots of folks who carry this argument in digital nomad or expat communities. Well, that’s fine. However, that does not mean that you must obey everything going on within that culture and to the local people’s lifestyle and mindset.

“Culture” is a fancy word to justify society’s pressure on an individual to behave and think in the same way with everyone in that “culture”. The fact that the word “culture” is viewed as fancy can be easily observable when people refuse to accept some bad phenomena as a part of their culture because a “culture” in their mind has to be something good (though Koreans are a bit different here as they are more used to self-censor and self-evaluate themselves.)

I believe “learning different cultures” is about getting impressions and in turn insights by “experiencing those different cultures”. By surrounding yourself with different environments, customs, the ways of life, it is much easier to give a fresh air to your brain and make an attempt to get out of your comfort zone. That’s what it is about when it comes to “learning different cultures” and it is not about obeying and conforming to anything happening there that do not serve you.

So, don’t be humble. You live as an individual, not as a representative of your culture. Be an arrogant traveller as possible. One of the great advantages of being a foreigner in a different culture or a different country is that people are much more generous to your exotic behaviours. Well, that guy is a foreigner, it’s understandable. So you reserve an exclusive right as a foreigner who is allowed to not follow the social norms in that society. Who cares? You only compare with yourself, thus free yourself from society’s views and pressures.

Stay as an arrogant traveller for ever.

Entonces, no seas humilde.

Should You Not Do Business with Friend?

There's a Korean saying you shouldn't do a business with your friends. Contrary from the conventional wisdom, I learned that I knew about my friends' credibility and trustworthiness far better when I had worked with them. It is just too easy to say, "Cheer up", "I wish everything goes well with you", or "You've got my full support". But you'll see, when you actually need helps and supports, not many will be around you to give you a hand. It is amusing to see that people often argue that they wouldn't expect something in return from friends, but when they are asked what they would expect and value from their friendships, they list things like supports and helps when in need.

In my experience, relationships established from businesses are much more supportive and helpful when in need. There's a much higher chance your besties will not show up at an important meeting or didn't take their part and responsibility once you set up a project to work with them. Well, friends are just for casual relationships and interactions to have fun together, you say. Didn't you say that you wanted and expected supports from your friend, though? While Koreans are so much obsessed with differentiating "real friends" from "friends you know", I don't see a reason to follow such practices. If all you need is some human interactions and relationships, you can do it with strangers at a bar or a hostel too. There's no reason to waste your time counting how many  "real friends" you have.

I wasted so much time in college as I had to come across with many seniors who asked me "Do you have real friends?" It made me to think that I was doing something wrong. I gotta find some real friends, not someone superficial or too casual, right? Don't listen to those shits. My life became freer than ever when there was no more folks who cared about how Korean I am. I am not worrying about how many real friends I have nor do I know how many friends I have. Yes, you do need human interactions and relationships. If that's what you're looking for right now, go out to talk to people and mingle with them. If you need supports and helps, do some hard works with them and see how things go. If you really want to set a criteria on who are your real friends or not, I would advise you to categorize them into 1) Friends who can help you in liver transplant 2) Friends who can borrow their legal name for a bank account when you're broke 3) All others.

Wish you best in your journey.

No escuches esas mierdas.
