One of the things misunderstood by most people is the value of “learning other cultures”. They’d say that it is cool to “learn different cultures” by adapting to the local culture and respecting local people. So-called “humble travellers” would go on further that you need to be humble enough to accept, adapt, respect to the local culture. There are lots of folks who carry this argument in digital nomad or expat communities. Well, that’s fine. However, that does not mean that you must obey everything going on within that culture and to the local people’s lifestyle and mindset.
“Culture” is a fancy word to justify society’s pressure on an individual to behave and think in the same way with everyone in that “culture”. The fact that the word “culture” is viewed as fancy can be easily observable when people refuse to accept some bad phenomena as a part of their culture because a “culture” in their mind has to be something good (though Koreans are a bit different here as they are more used to self-censor and self-evaluate themselves.)
I believe “learning different cultures” is about getting impressions and in turn insights by “experiencing those different cultures”. By surrounding yourself with different environments, customs, the ways of life, it is much easier to give a fresh air to your brain and make an attempt to get out of your comfort zone. That’s what it is about when it comes to “learning different cultures” and it is not about obeying and conforming to anything happening there that do not serve you.
So, don’t be humble. You live as an individual, not as a representative of your culture. Be an arrogant traveller as possible. One of the great advantages of being a foreigner in a different culture or a different country is that people are much more generous to your exotic behaviours. Well, that guy is a foreigner, it’s understandable. So you reserve an exclusive right as a foreigner who is allowed to not follow the social norms in that society. Who cares? You only compare with yourself, thus free yourself from society’s views and pressures.
Stay as an arrogant traveller for ever.
Entonces, no seas humilde.
